Author Illustrator Visits
Hi, I'm Sam
I’m one of those strange people who love public speaking. During my academia days, I gave talks on neuroscience, vision, and circadian rhythms. I used to put together fun, interactive science exhibits for kids at the University of Michigan as part of BrainsRule!, and in San Francisco at various public events.
Now as the author and illustrator of The First Chinese Festivals series, I’ve enjoyed sharing my interest in Chinese mythology, legends, history, and culture with everyone in our diverse world.
I’m based in Southwest Michigan, and I look forward to hearing from you at Sam(at)LSamZhang.com

Meet the Author
Imagine moving to a new place where no one knows the fairytales, books, and movies you loved. That’s what happened to me in the 3rd grade. I felt that the kids around me were missing out on so much, and the urge to share the stories I grew up with fueled my passion to become an author.
Some of the topics I’ve talked about include:
- My unique life in China.
- Adjusting to my new home in America where everyone spoke a different language.
- Keeping my childhood dream alive through my journey from neuroscientist to author/illustrator and nonprofit director.
- Story creation & publishing process
- Living with Bengal cats and a Border Collie 😺🐶 (character/story inspirations).
- Share your dreams and goals and how you can achieve them.
- Finding joy in your hobbies. (Mine include playing music, sewing, and more recently, crocheting! I find joy in learning new things.)
- Q&A: ask me anything.
- Book signings. (You can order books directly from me).
Chinese Festivals
- Explore festival traditions, including specialty foods.
- Share the legends and history behind the traditions.
- How they impact the world today.
